How to restore old cars

                          Car Restoration Basics

The first step is choosing a car you want to restore. Again, consider your dream car — if you had a time machine, what car would you bring back to the future? When we hear the term “restoration,” we often think of the classic American car those are the cars that many auto enthusiasts grew up looking for. However, any type of car can be restored, from classic BMWs to the classic sports cars of the early 1980s. Still, keep in mind that the more rare the car is, the more difficult and expensive it will be to find parts for it.

                          Restoring the Car’s Exterior

An exterior restoration means more than just a new coat of paint. Depending on the state of the car, a full restoration means stripping the whole car down to the bare metal underneath. Usually, restorers will remove every body panel from the frame of the car and remove any traces of old paint, often via chemical treatments or sandblasting. The panels are then coated in a gray epoxy primer before they are repainted piece by piece and placed back on the car.

                                 Restoring the Powertrain

People loved classic muscle cars like our ’65 Mustang example, mainly because they were fast. Sure, many of them looked great, but it’s quite likely that fewer people would remember them if they were slow. Therefore, one of your most important restoration tasks is to rebuild or replace the car’s engine

First, start by completely dismantling the engine. Fuel pumps, carburetors, cylinder heads and compressors — everything must go. As you did with the car’s exterior, examine each part and see what needs to be repaired and which parts need to be replaced. Then once you know what needs to be replaced you have to go online and  order the parts but make sure you go to like four websites before ordering someone could easily trick you into buying an old part that barley work for the price of a new part.

what are the different categories of old cars

Antique car: An antique car is a classification that is often set by state law. States often have a special type of license plate for these cars. For that reason they set rules stating what qualifies as “antique.” In most cases it is a car that’s over 45 years old. Generally the car should be maintained in a way that keeps it true to the original manufacturer specificationsuntitled

Classic car: This classification definitely overlaps with antique cars. The definition of classic car is actually quite similar to that of antique cars. A car must be at least 20 years old, but not more than 40 years old to be considered a classic car. It should again have been repaired and maintained in a way that keeps it true to its original design and specifications. In other words it should not be modified or altered. In addition, many add a stipulation that the vehicle should have been manufactured no earlier than 1925. For these reasons all classic cars are also antique cars, but not all antique cars are classic.                                                                                untitled

Vintage car: There is also overlap between vintage cars and antique cars. Some vintage cars quality as antique cars, but not all vintage cars are antique and vice versa. Different groups set different cut off points for what qualifies as a vintage car and what does not. Generally, cars that are considered Vintage were manufactured between the years of 1919 and 1930, but some end it at 1925. Unlike the other two classifications, having had modifications does not necessarily keep a car from being a vintage car.images
